Overview

The Chassis Mechanic will be responsible to perform all types of chassis maintenance and repairs including (but not limited to) welding repairs, brake jobs, tire replacements, electrical repairs, refurbishment, major and minor straightening, component repair and or replacement, welding (M.I.G. and electric arc), cutting with a gas torch and the use of standard repair tools to repair and/or replace chassis parts. The Chassis Mechanic must be knowledgeable of, and observe, all safety rules and adhere to all TRAC policies and procedures. 

 

1st shift (7am - 5:30pm) / 2nd shift (3:30pm - 1:30am)

Responsibilities

  • Daily review of safety rules
  • Perform container chassis refurbishment, maintenance and repairs of various types using appropriate tools, methods, process and procedures
  • Safely handle chassis and other related items using the appropriate handling equipment or devices
  • Communicate with management on repair requirements and methods
  • Perform chassis inspections and write repair estimates to TRAC and or industry repair criteria and standards
  • Safely remove, handle and reinstall tires

FMCSA Inspection Requirements – MUST:

  • Understand FMCSA container chassis inspection criteria and be able to identify defective components
  • Have proven and documented minimum three years knowledge of methods, procedures, tools and equipment used when performing an FMCSA chassis inspection
  • Be capable of performing FMCSA chassis inspections by reason of a minimum three year’s documented experience or training, or both

    

Mechanical FMCSA Brake Criteria – MUST:

  • Have a proven and documented knowledge and understanding of container chassis brake operation, service and inspection
  • Be knowledgeable of methods, procedures, tools and equipment used when performing a chassis brake service or inspection with a minimum three years documented experience

 

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • One to three years of proven and documented experience inspecting, repairing, servicing and maintaining container chassis
  • Minimum three years documented knowledge and experience of AAR, IICL and DOT rules and criteria as they relate to container chassis
  • One to three years of welding experience
  • Must meet minimum FMCSA requirements
  • Have or be able to obtain a Forklift Certification to operate TRAC forklift and UTR equipment
  • Ability to review a written plan and execute according to the TRAC and industry accepted process, procedures and standards
  • Ability to function effectively in a fast paced, team oriented work environment
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize workloads and handle multiple tasks
  • This position may require periodic support of other local TRAC M&R activities
  • Must have comprehensive set of hand tools / box commensurate for repairing and maintaining container chassis
  • Ability to safely crouch, crawl and bend frequently
  • Ability to work outdoors and standing for extended periods of time
  • Ability to read and write legibly
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus
  • Class C License highly preferred
